In opposition of when younger athletes exercise, the size of the muscle in the walls of the heart chambers increase. Which the younger athletes have a lower heart rate. In other words, the heart is able to slow down because it is working more efficiently. In older athletes, heart muscle size is not increased by exercise to the same degree.
Aging also leads to a decrease in overall lung capacity and a decline in the ability of the lungs to move oxygen from the air into the bloodstream, some of it is also due to smoking in a few older persons. Additionally, we also lose both muscle strength and muscle mass. Our muscles are also affected overtime. Even though we can fight the loss of muscle mass with exercise, we will still be losing these Type II fibers more known as (fast twitch muscle fibers) at the same rate. What happens is that instead of developing new muscle fibers from exercise as we were younger, the remaining fibers merely increase in amount.
