Why Do People Kill Other People Knowing It's Wrong

When I was a little girl, my father used to work during the night and stay home with me during the day. We would gaze at the television show called, “I Almost Got Away with it” on the ID Discovery channel. The show would accompany a convict that would apprise their lives as fugitives before the criminals were caught. The episode that really interested me was when a man killed his girlfriend and took secret tunnels to Mexico and then walked to Guatemala to try and escape the FBI. This began my instant fascination with understanding human behavior, especially, criminals. Whenever an episode ends, I would ask my father, “Why do people kill other people knowing it’s wrong” and he would respond, “People are crazy.” I was about six years old

Jeffery Dahmer, Ted Bundy, and Charles Manson are three very well known serial killers. Society has deemed these individuals crazy psychopaths for their violent crimes and behaviors. However, is there an underlying reason, or mechanism, that has influenced their behavior? More specifically, is there a region, or regions, of the brain that play a role in the planning and execution of violent crimes such as these? Researchers hypothesize that dysfunction in the frontal lobe region, specifically the orbitofrontal cortex and amygdala, may be the answer behind psychopathy.…

A lot of criminals come from troubled childhoods and/or broken homes. Most people don't wake up thinking that they want to start a life of crime because they have nothing better to do. Jeffrey Dahmer and Charles Manson are no exception. I would like to think if they were raised differently, they might not have become the notorious criminals that people love to hate. Dahmer and Manson have been in and out of jail since they were young.…

Sadly in the flawed world that we live in, there are people who have clouded judgments and cannot function rationally. There are people who can commit malicious acts and justify them by their own means that do not necessarily make sense to a sane person. Unfortunately some of these people are psychopaths and serial killers. One of the first serial killers documented in America was Dr. Henry Howard Holmes. He created a hotel in Chicago in 1893 for The World’s Columbian Exhibition.…

John Wayne Gacy is one of the most infamous serial killers in American history. During a seven-year span of the 1970s, Gacy murdered 33 men. As is the case with many high profile murderers, to the average person, one would have to be insane to commit such acts, which is what Gacy 's defense claimed. The jury did not buy it though, and Gacy would be executed by lethal injection in 1994. Criminologists study why people commit crime, and assemble theories.…

The movie, Tarsem Singh’s The Cell, explores concepts in psychology, specifically the themes of child development and criminology. The former topic is something I think I can relate more to as I am still essentially a child. Popular media usually portray the messed up childhood as a possible reason for people becoming criminals, and there’s probably some truth to that. The latter topic interests me the most, since from a young age, I seemed a bit too preoccupied with criminals and killers for my own good. I would spend multiple late nights glued to the TV, watching America’s Most Wanted, despite it being a show about loose murderers and their heinous crimes.…

Over the years there have been many theories developed in order to help understand why it is that people decide to take part in some of these criminal acts, while some people stand together and claim that this is a result of poor parenting and others arguing that it is due to the environment that the child is around. Regardless of one’s point of view, it is very clear that crimes are occurring and that biological, sociological, and psychological theories have been developed in an attempt to help understand why it is that some individuals take part in these crimes. I started watching horror movies with my brother when I was about eleven years old. This fascination of serial killers and ghosts led to my interest of documentaries about real life murders and serial killer. The aspect of these killers that interested me the most was that fact that many are “normal” people. How could an everyday person, just like me, have the desire to do something so horrible? Why don’t we all commit such horrible crimes?…

People have continuously asked the question of whether serial killers are born or made. Researchers have done countless studies to provide the world with an answer. Truth be told, despite all of the research, there is still no definite answer (Allely, Minnis and Thompson). Of course, something is mentally wrong with a person if they desire killing other human beings, but the decision to act on this desire is based solely on other influences that caused the person to make that choice. People are obviously more comfortable with blaming the act of serial killing on some mental defect of the brain because it is frightening to think to think we as a society play a part in a person becoming a serial killer.…
