Actress and breast cancer survivor Cynthia Nixon once said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself. So the only thing to really be afraid of is if you don’t go get your mammograms.” Fear, like people, comes in many different forms. Every person has different beliefs and different opinions, and with that comes different fears. Some people are afraid of snakes and spiders, while others are scared of heights. However, fears, like beliefs and opinions, are not all about an individual. Other people in your life can influence your beliefs, opinions, and fears. This can all be compared to the 50% of US women ages 40-85 that do not get their annual mammograms due to fear, false information, and trustworthy organizations giving them unreliable recommendations on mammography (“Many Women Do Not Get Regular Mammograms”). These associations must stop contradicting each other on mammograms, and women must start getting tested annually. Once you look at the causes, effects, and some possible solutions of this issue, you will agree that women need to get their annual mammograms to ensure short and long term health.

To get a better understanding on the mammography issue, we have to identify what the problem is. Women are not going to get their annual mammograms. If you are on the outside of this problem, it may be hard to comprehend why women would not go get a mammogram.
