What exactly is welfare? According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, “Welfare is the provision of a minimal level of well-bring and social support for all citizens, sometimes referred to as public aid.” In the United States the funds for a welfare or public aid system is provided by the tax payers. In all began during the New Deal that President Franklin D. Roosevelt proposed to the people of America in the depression years. People all over America were suffering. There were few jobs, the Dust Bowl was destroyed, and the Stock Market had crashed. The citizens of the United States was looking to the federal government to help them out until the economy turned around.

Nowadays it has almost become a standard of living and a right. People feel that are just entitled to get welfare no matter what. The government is partly to blame for this because they make it very easy to get welfare Also, there isn’t a good system of checks to see if people are really deserving of welfare. People get upset about it because of situations like when they go to the grocery store and a person has a ebt card and they are pulling two baskets full of food. Working people are frustrated at this because it seems that these welfare recipients are able to purchase more food than someone who works. They also see their baskets full of high priced steaks and other foods and a lot of fattening foods like potato chips, cookies and sodas. This program says that people receiving aid should actively look for work, work a minimum of 6 hours per day, and only receive funds for a limited time period. The problem is that for every dollar the person earns, a dollar is taken away from their stipend. With the high cost of food and other of life’s needs, it is hard to keep a roof over your head and food on the table. Sometimes the poor have to choose between food and rent.
