Two groups of people divided by social class and appearance. In the novel, Johnny kills one of the Socs to protect his friend from dying. Johnny is justified in what he did and is not guilty. Johnny carries the knife because he had been beaten severely by Socs in the Past. Next, Johnny kills Bob to protect his friend from drowning. Lastly, Johnny killed Bob because by stabbing Bob.
