“A book about dead bodies is a conversational curveball. It’s all well and good to write an article about corpses, but a full-size book plants a red flag on your character” (Roach 14). This statement, from the novel Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach, proves how a story needs to be extraordinary to stand out and make an impact. This novel and the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell both are examples of proof for the following statement: “A story must be exceptional enough to justify its telling; it must have something more unusual to relate than the ordinary experience of every average man and woman”-Thomas Hardy.…

“The storyteller” is an article by Sandra Cisneros about her life journey beginning from post graduate school to a school teacher. In between she writes about her life in the point of views of a dependent, a growing writer, and a teacher, with short descriptions that gives the reader a glimpse of her mentality on each stage. All that is mixed up into the life of an average Hispanic woman from Chicago. Halfway through her article, during her “growing writer” stage, Cisneros writes a paragraph about what her and her friends do together.…

Personal Narrative Assessment Notes The narrative “Out in the Open” would benefit from stronger, more concise language. It's vital to be careful with modifying words. Weak modifiers such as, basically, sort of, and mostly, detract from the strength of all genres of writing. Repetition reviled itself multiple times towards the end of the narrative. The adjective “happy” was overused (three times in 50 words).…

Stories bond us. Sooner or later, every story must be told. Storytelling can heal the storyteller and enrich the listener, as well as every untold story will scream its existence through our desires, actions, and dreams. From the very beginning of the novel, Xavier, "the second to last in a long line of Windigo killers" (65) and Elijah, who “lives for what the day will bring” (52) are conflicted as a responsibility-driven man versus desire-driven man.…

All these stories speak to something deeper, these stories can be realer than real; “A thing may happen and be a total lie; another thing may not happen and be truer than the truth” (O’Brien, 80). That’s the thing about building stories: there’s always some point to them. Even if it’s just so everyone else doesn’t end up with hives like Dylan, “Every effective story idea sends a charged idea out to us” (McKee,…

The Traditional Big Bad Wolf If someone was asked to list their favorite stories of all time, there is a good chance that it would include an archetypal "big bad wolf." Throughout history writers have used the concept of a central antagonist that has displayed the same general characteristics consistently. It has become iconic in literature for quality stories to include the "big bad wolf" as a main character. Flannery O'Connor, like a lot of writers, used this same archetypal "big bad wolf" in A Good Man is Hard to Find.…

This story is a very moving piece of writing. The author adds in her own personal experience which will appeal more to the readers. Not only does she added her own life story but she uses great examples of logic emotion and establishing her credibility. In her writing she urges those of us who tend to be taciturn to share our important truths with others now, because we are all in this existence for a finite period of time (Lorde, 43). For this assignment, I have chosen to watch Arrival, a 2016 American science fiction drama directed by Denis Villeneuve. Primarily, when I walked into the theater, I noticed that there were not so many people in it. Probably, that was due to the late film session I chose to visit or because it was a weekday, so the majority of people have to wake up early for work or study next morning, or both. I cannot say that I have distinguished particular individuals among others, however, I noticed a group of young noisy students and thought that they would probably be that noisy throughout the film.…
