Steroids and performance enhancement drugs, PEDS, have been banned in the National Football League and in Major League Baseball since the early 1980’s and readjusted in the early 2000’s (Kelley). Players’ know about the stipulations of which exact drugs are allowed and which are banned within their league, but still ten NFL players were banned within the 2015 season for the use of PEDS (Performance Enhancing Drugs in Sports Fast Facts). Recently, allegations from outside sources have been leading to many of the suspensions today compared to just the league’s drug testing and busting these athletes. Additionally, long-term abuse of anabolic steroids increases the risk of serious conditions such as heart attack, stroke, and cancer” (Lew). This conveys that steroids are awful for the body and cause serious problems to the human body. Majority of the players do not think of the long term effects of steroids, but only at the short term such as their abilities increasing. Former players have said that once they stopped using steroids, they began to have suicidal thoughts. There have also been past players who have actually committed suicide. The National Football League and the Major League Baseball should not condemn these players to possible go through this. These leagues would eliminate the problem completely if they tighten these rules. Also, viewers should not have to possibly go through deaths of favorite players that are caused from steroids. This issue has existed in society for a long time but it began being a big problem in sports within the 1990’s. Steroids became well known because of the home run race between Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire. The viewership was at an all time high during this period of time. The usage of these drugs do not just affect the players in the MLB and NFL, but also players in college and younger. Allowing athletes to use steroids in the majors will open the doors to collegiate athletes and high school athletes to start using steroids younger so they can gain an edge on opponents and get one step closer to the professional world. Abusing these drugs at an even younger age will cause more health issues and deaths. Getting cancer and health problems such as a stroke at a very young age can ruin their life forever. These athletes will also be misguided by the use of steroids because there are not any promises of making it into the league just for taking these drugs.
