Imagine going out into the world for the first time as an adult and realizing everyone around you isn't treating you equal. This is usually what happens when 18 year olds are now considered adults. Eighteen year olds are trying to become adults, but aren't being treated as adults because parents don't step back, peers don't treat them as adults, and they want to leave the nest.
The first reason is that parents don't step back. In the article Mistakes Parents Make That Push Adult Children Away, the author explains that parents need to step back but still connect with their children as grown ups. Parents don't want their child to fail at things, but even though parents love their kids that they need to let them have trial and error and be able to grow from mistakes and learn from the good and bad things. Then they will be able to cope on their own and not just depend on their parents to fix everything. The author goes into detail about if they fail that its ok and it happens and that parents need to let it happen and to step back to let their child deal with the issue.
