Why Do Kids Have Recess

Kids need the chance to enjoy recess by having fun with friends and running around during school and just be kids. Children should have a full opportunity to add recreational activities to their school schedules, and should be a key element in the education system. The opportunity for play and recreation is a fundamental human right of every child and is needed not only to boost physical development, but also to keep the mind working. Researchers, parents, and teachers are starting to realize that not only playground time is great for kids- it is crucial. Kids need to have freedom during the school day by exercising and socializing with friends, which in turn can benefit health, growth, and development as a student. Recess is an important part in every child's life. Recess is a vital subject that most people overlook, rather we must understand so that children can have breaks and, for them to appreciate the reason why kids need recess. 44% of school’s administrators report cutting significant time from recess so there is more time for subjects like reading and math (Nanci Hellmich 2). Everyday tardiness, acting out in class, and failure to complete homework are being punished by not allowing the kids to go outside for recess (Rae Pica 1). Teachers and administrators want to withhold recess to punish a student's misbehavior (Rae Pica 1). It is difficult for students to remember large quantities of information with seven to eight classes back to back, instead have a small break if not two during the school. Teachers should strive for recess because it benefits the children's health, allows the children to be more independent, and increases their knowledge and development in becoming a better and smarter student. Because of the increase in demand for recess from many parents, teachers are starting to let go and let the kids have autonomy. Schools should keep recess on the schedule and the teachers should not take it away.
