Kids will be the same without winning a participation trophy. Many critics will disagree with the use of participation trophies: “Rewarding accomplishment is part of the education process” (Priceman). Rewards can help parents teach their children new habits. Kids can be taught new habits without getting a reward. Kids don’t need a reward for everything that they do. They do not need to give kids rewards for participating in something that they want to do. “The whole notion that we are creating a nation of wimps because we hand out Participation Trophies is only the case if we want it to be” (Priceman). If kids got a Participation Trophy for everything that they have done then they wouldn’t ever accomplish anything in there life. Participation Trophies are holding kids back from growing up. At some point kids need to grow up and the best time for that is at a moderate young age and stop giving them Participation Trophies will help their grow up plan.

Priceman explains “They were taught that these awards were placeholders in life” (Priceman). Priceman is explaining that having trophy as a placeholder is Ok and nothing is wrong with that, and that is what kids should think of Trophies . Priceman believes when everyone grows up from their childhood and looks back at the Trophies they will remember what they did when they were a kid thanks to having that as a placeholder. However, “We must focus on process and progress, not results and rewards” (Merryman). With giving them Trophies they will not think they need to make progress and don’t care about the process. This is why everyone needs to quit giving out Participation Trophies to young children growing
