Do you think kids should get participation awards for something they aren’t really good at? Kids shouldn’t be given awards that they don’t deserve, there should only be one winner and one winner only, instead of everyone winning wins. My reasons for thinking this are: people who think they are good at something tend to do the same thing, people who think they are good at something don’t try to get better because they think they are good already, and the real winners of the award don’t feel as good about their accomplishment since everyone got an award just like them.
The first reason that I think everyone should not get awards just for participating, people who think they are good at something tend to do the same thing. When you get awarded for something you don’t deserve, an award still makes you feel good. Awards are supposed to make someone feel good about their hard work and all of their time that they put into their sport or

When an older sibling gets something at the age of 10, likely, the younger sibling will get that same thing at the age of 8. This is a kind of example of what I’m trying to say. When someone that wins something and gets the same award as someone that didn’t do nearly as well, that’s a problem. This makes the winners not feel as good about what they have done. The people that work the hardest at something should get the most out of their hard work, not feel at the same level as someone else. Another example would be this: if a teacher says, ¨the person who scores the highest on the next test gets to have lunch with me and I will buy.¨ The test comes along and the person who scores the highest gets that, but everyone else in the class gets to have lunch the teacher too. This situation does not make the person who got the highest score feel as good about

What would life be like if everyone got an award for simply showing up to work, school, and sports? Based on the "Trophies for All" policy every youth athlete gets a trophy for simply coming to games and practices. Participation trophies do not prepare these future adults to live and work in the real world. These youth athletes also need to know that you have to work hard to get what you want. And finally, youth athletes need to know that not everyone is a winner.…

On the topic of participation awards, Lisa Heffernan and Vivian Diller have both published articles advocating either for, or against rewarding children at a young age, regardless if they’ve won a game or not. In terms of making a strong argument, both writers used celebrity testimonies, life experience, and quotes from reputable sources, some tactics more effective than others. In Lisa Heffernan’s article favoring participation trophies, “In Defense of Participation Trophies: Why They Really do Teach the Right Values,” she often pulls from her most powerful and relevant source to her topic- her son. Statements such as “When my son was around eight years old … he scoffed at the very idea that such an award existed.” would play a critical role in setting up a counter argument, but much like her other quotations in her article, it was followed by a statement from Hillary L. Friedman, a sociologist, that initially seems to back up her son’s opinion.…

Corey Turner remembers collecting participation trophies from the YMCA soccer program he was involved in as a young athlete. These trophies are now sitting in a dusty box somewhere in his parent's basement. This leads him to question whether or not young athletes should receive trophies for just showing up. Corey Turner is not alone, people across the nation have debated this issue for as long as youth sports have been in existence. I believe that kids should not get trophies for participating because kids should learn life lessons from both wins and losses and participation trophies do more harm than good.…

Many people find themselves asking if participation trophies are even important or not, or if we should even have them in general. Well we should, for reasons that might have been overlooked. Participation trophies show a great significance consisting of commitment and dedication, they remind one of an experience or the friendships they made, and they give more meaning than you would think to a young child learning self-confidence. Commitment and and dedication show the growth of responsibility and a participation trophy shows just this. Richard Greenberg says this, “Participation trophies mark the fact that these kids kept a commitment and showed up to the games.”…

This is my viewpoint and I gave you three reasons backed up with evidence to show you why. I told you that they give people a false perspective, that only the winners should receive awards, and lastly that they have no real value. I hope that you take these into consideration. Finally I would like to leave you with an excerpt from a quote by James Harrison speaking about participation awards: "I'm sorry I'm not sorry for believing that everything in life should be earned and I'm not about to raise two boys to be men by making them believe that they are entitled to something just because they tried their best...cause sometimes your best is not…

If trophies are given out as participation awards, they lose their meaning and athletes wouldn’t give their best efforts. Athletes should have to work for a trophy instead of just showing up to receive a trophy. Trophies should be a motivational tool not something that could potentially encourage athletes to decrease their efforts. To earn a trophy, athletes should have to prepare and perform above average.…
