Teenagers who are sent to adult prisons are more likely to be physically and sexually assaulted. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Statistics, 21% and 13% of sexually assaulted victims are under the age of 18 in 2005 and 2006, which is a high percentage because 1% of prisoners are juveniles (“Juveniles Should Not Be Placed in Adult Prisons”). This implies that adult prisons do not help improve the situation of juveniles. In the article “Juveniles Should Not Be Placed in Adult Prisons,” it also states that in adult prisons youths are locked down in small cells for 23 hours with no natural light which can cause a risk of suicide and other mental disorders (Para 6). This shows that adult prisons contributes to the mental disorders of
