Personal Narrative: A Career As A Classroom Teacher

Having not studied education in college and not being a certified teacher has allowed me to work in many atypical classroom settings. At a young age I was part of a group run completely by youth which organized and held religious retreat for young students in Massachusetts. In that I was teaching and discussing religion with middle school and high school students. A hard topic to teach and share but it really taught me a lot about how to present information in a way in which youth people could relate to. I also learned how to take charge and conduct many bible studies with both youth and few adults. In all of the jobs that I ever had this by far would have been the hardest but most beneficial one I’ve have. On a daily basis I reach back to use those skills I learned on the council and from working with the many youth of the years.
Another rare experience that I had was one winter I spent two weeks in Haiti. While there I assisted in English classes for Haitians. It was a vocational school to teach them basic labor work and English so that they could hopefully apply to trade schools in the United States. These trades will help the Haitian people learn how to trade on their own after suffering as a third world culture. Haitian is a French based language which makes learning English very

There are roughly 15 students in this program and it is my job of helping each of them with their homework and helping them solve problems. I was introduced to the multi-faceted world of teaching, classroom management, lesson planning, and assessing students. I truly appreciate all the work my teachers and professors have done for me so much more now that I have been 'on the other side ' of it all. I completed my ten-hour class observation at the private school Georgia Military Prep. The Georgia Military Prep School is located on Georgia Military College’s main campus in Milledgeville. At GMC prep I observed Ms. Jennifer Spencer's advanced eighth grade math class. Ms. Spencer has a decidedly pleasant air about her, a quick smile, and a brisk step that belies her ‘let us get the job done’ type attitude. On my first day observing her class, I soon gathered that Ms. Spencer always has a goal in mind when she sets foot in the classroom.…

My classroom procedures are very clear, which the class has become familiar with over the semester. Students are to come in from their special class and grab their materials and go sit on the carpet and get ready for math to begin. These are expectations that should be memorized by now. Many of them do this and it contributes to the flow of the classroom and the engagement level of the entire groups. Students are expected to pay attention to the speaker during the mini-lesson by facing their way and not playing with any other items.…

I remember when I was 5, the first time I went to a building daily for 8 hours. I sat down on the cold blue chair. In front of me was a bin of crayons, all the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple. I remember sitting in the cold room and having the freedom to draw marks on my blank sheet of paper. The dye scratching against the table, colors spreading across the canvas like the sun, rising in the early morning.…
