Why Do I Quit 7th Grade Math

Improved Essays
I never thought that I could do 60% of 7th grade math on my own in 2 weeks, and it just seemed like an impossibility! Over the next few days I pondered over what my decision should be. Should I just quit and be placed back in standard math, or should I put in the extra effort to make it into accelerated math? I decided to try and see what I could get done, and it ended up being one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
I’m at my desk in math class and suddenly I hear “Sam, would you come here for a second?” said Mrs. Kukovec. I report to her desk, and she hands me an information sheet that is inviting me to join challenge math. As I returned to my desk excitement started to fill my mind about the opportunity I had just received, but as

“See, that’s the thing I wanted to tell you about. I have to finish all of 7th grade math to jump up to 8th grade math, and it’s all on the computer.” I explained to her doubtfully.
“I think you can do it! All you have to do is try and give it all your effort.” explained my mom. I explained to her that I would try, but I might have to drop out if it gets too difficult. When 4th quarter started I was put into a study hall in the computer lab with all the other kids trying to get into accelerated math. When I started, I glided through the lessons like a hot knife through butter. Although, I own some credit to my friend, Cayden, because he helped me pass most of my lessons. In addition, we messed around a lot, and it made that study hall somewhat enjoyable. Unfortunately, he decided to drop out, and it took the fun out of the class. I fell behind, and waited until summer to do it to see if I wanted to still complete the math. I had until June 26th to complete the program. Soon, June came along, and I had a discussion with my mom on whether I should try to finish it or not.We both decided that I try, and I devised a plan that would help me get through the program. I would do about 5% of the math a day everyday, and I’d still have a couple days to spare in case there was a problem. Listen, I know 5% doesn’t seem like a lot, but that’s equivalent to about 3 difficult lessons! It was tough, but finally

All throughout my school career, starting all the way in elementary school, school came very easy for me. I found that I rarely had to try hard at anything because it seems like I just knew it. With very little studying I was able to maintain high grades. It all started in 7th grade when I struggled with fractions. The following year, I was put in “Bridge to Algebra”, which was a class for those who wasn’t ready for Algebra I, but also understands some Algebra. I passed the class so I was able to enroll in Algebra I for my freshman year. I was excited to move on to Algebra I, but I realized that everyone else in my school class was enrolled in Geometry and I was behind.…

There’s a Chinese Proverb that says, “Failure is not falling down, but refusing to get back up again.” I really wish I heard that quote when I thought I was a failure, but really was just being lazy. In Carol Dweck’s article “Brainology” a study is conducted on seventh grade students and their mindsets. Their mindsets were measured and studied for two years. Dweck studied the difference between the fixed mindset and the growth mindset students and how they did in school.…

Math has always come fairly easily to me, starting when I took Algebra 1 as a seventh grader. I’ve excelled many years, even going into my school’s math and science program where the students are given honors math and science classes from ninth grade through twelfth grade. I’ve always been a step ahead in math so that is how I was able to enroll in calculus last year. Everyone else in my class was going to take BC Calculus so I thought I should too, I could handle it if they could.…

Throughout my entire school career, I have been frustrated at my math classes, but it wasn’t that they were going too fast; it was that they were going too slow. Memoir Draft If there's one way to spend an evening, it's doing math problems the whole night. Of course, I could have been at an award ceremony in the capital, but since I didn’t win anything, there wasn’t a need for me to go, so instead, I spent my night catching up on some math problems. It wasn’t until my mother got a phone call from the 6th grade science teacher that I realized we probably should have gone to the awards ceremony. Earlier that day, contestants at the state science fair were allowed to skip school and go to the Convention Center for judging, so I did, along with my science partner. My team, which consisted of me, the above partner, and another acquaintance, started when I found out that they shared my distaste for the most popular choice of science project at the time (water filters), and needed a third member.…

This semester seemed to pass by quickly, I believe the main reason I did not make an A in this class was due to the fact that even though I had good intentions in the beginning of the semester to go to tutoring I did not realize how demanding intermediate algebra was going to be. I had to attend class twice a week and classes were four hours long it was not physically exhausting , but it was mentally exhausting. So, as a result, I did not go to tutoring for English when I should have to have my papers critiqued for mistakes. Eight weeks into this semester I found out I did not pass my intermediate algebra class which left me frustrated and slightly unmotivated with all my classes. I put in at least forty plus hours a week on the intermediate algebra which did not help at all in the end.…

When I think about my classroom this year in relationship to the Habits of Mind one mindset truly stands out, responding with wonderment and awe. This year my students are so intrigued when there is some type of mystery that we have to solve. They love to use their imagination, which allows them to see the content in a very different way. In our current math block on Friday students participate in a math investigation called Truly Problematic Situation. This is a time where students have to come up with a solution to a challenging situation.…
