Why Do Hall Sweeps

Improved Essays
Students run through the finish line. The finish line being the classroom. These students run out of breath to not get swept up like dirt. What happens if you don’t make it in time? You get swept up and end up missing out important information or assignments in class. These hall sweeps should be diminished. The administrators at Milton High School don’t realize that many students don’t mean to be late. Let’s take first period hall sweeps as an example. Many people have different morning routines. Perhaps, many juniors or seniors that are late is due to the amount of traffic on the way to school which they have no control over. So, the first thing that happens once they enter the school, they get a hall sweep slip, which is unfair. Then there are those students that hope they make it in time to go to their locker and back to their class before the tardy bell rings, which, again, they aren’t trying to be late. Now, this could happen during any period of a hall sweep. When we had an extinction, where we stopped the hall sweeps for about 2 days, students forgot about them. Now, I know in my Latin class that if I miss 10 minutes of class time, I miss my opportunity to do the warm up that would count as a quiz grade in the future. If you have a test in a class, though, and you miss the first 10-15 minutes of class time, that was time that you could’ve used to take the test. Instead, you’d have to wait in line to get your name on the hall sweep list during that 10-15 minutes. Hall sweeps waist valuable time. Not only do students miss quizzes, warm ups, or test time, but also class instructions. This may not seem to be “that big” of a deal, but many times, class instructions may be very important. Class instructions inform students on what they will be doing for the entire class period, so the students would be able to work

With school having many students but not very many teachers classes are skewed beyond belief. Students do not get to pick their courses but are randomly assigned. This means if a student is interested in let’s say hairdressing and she gets put in a sewing class she is stuck in that sewing class. So students that are qualified to take an AP course may not be able to be put in those classes because they are randomly assigned and that means some kids are destined to fail if they are not up to AP standards and are put in an AP course. In addition, if students do not have internet or a place to study they have only a half hour after school to work in the library.…

Year after year, students at West Islip High School are absolutely distraught when they get their schedules in the summer. This year, as well as previous years, many students had to go to their guidance counselor and change things before the school year even started! Still, others waited until the first day, or even the first week before requesting changes. Some students reported having multiple gym and lunch periods, while others had classes in their schedule that were supposed to be every day, but they only had these classes every other day, making it nearly impossible for them to keep up with their peers. These students had to leave these classes, no matter if they liked the class or not.…

I am currently enjoying my senior year here at California High School. Although I consider many of my classes to be easy here, the weight of all of this year's homework is already being felt. It is my firm belief that for the sake of our students, a study hall is needed. More than 70% of students in our school are involved in extracurricular activities. I am currently involved in Boy Scouts, band, drumline, youth group, spanish club, math team, academic team, FBLA and also have a part-time job as a bagboy at Cal’s Thriftway to provide the money to save up for college and drive to school to go to all of the club meetings and practices.…

It is an ongoing argument on whether high school students should arrive at schools later to help the teens who are sleep deprived, depressed and have serious mood swings. This is inconvenient for a number of reasons. Parents cannot get their children to school on time if the school time is changed, and it interrupts the teens schedules who are already accustomed to the 7:30 time scheduling. In the passage “ High schools starting later to help sleepy teens” by: Michelle Trudeau it states that later school times are helping the teens be more alert in class, they have less depression issues and the parents have less problems than before due to their emotions being more regulated.…

Have you ever lugged a bucket of firewood that you needed to use to warm-up your classroom? Do your teaching duties require you to carry a pail of water for your students to drink? Can you imagine having to sweep and mop your classroom’s floor before your students arrive? I realized that those three mind-boggling questions sounded strange, but during the Colonial Times of education, teachers were required to perform those dreadful tasks. They also had a strenuous teaching contract.…

In an article titled “What’s Holding Back American Teenagers?” by author Laurence Steinberg, the claim is made that, “Our high schools are a disaster.” Steinberg begins by mentioning education policies which had recently come to the attention of Obama during his term as president. This involved two issues, the first being early-childhood education and the second being college accessibility; however, Steinberg’s article preferred to focus on a third issue: American high schools. Throughout the article, he continually reflected on research from organizations such as OECD, The National Assessment of Educational Progress, and The National Center for Education Statistics.…

Even with the later start times that some schools have students are still coming in late to class because of the lack of sleep they are getting at night due to an abundant amount of homework they have. For schools that have already changed their start time to being later in the day their sport programs are having to start later and then even ending later at night because of the late dismissal from school. Being able to come into school later in the day is better for some students because they feel more energetic and rested, but for some students it is still about the same due to bus routes having to start early to accommodate everyone.…

Being a goon squad leader next year, it’s come to my attention that students aren’t wanting to attend, and I feel like all students should be required to attend. Looking at the situation, students don’t want to attend pep rallies because they claim they experience headaches and anxiety, I feel like it should still be a requirement to attend pep rallies and show school spirit. Pep rallies give you the social experience, a break from class and reality to be crazy and have fun, and it gets students hyped up for games and getting them involved. First off, they give a bonding purpose. Pep rallies give students a way to express school spirit and get to have the social experience.…
