It is cruelly ironic that judicial decisions in the United States denying the right to same-sex marriage cite the welfare of children, yet those very decisions harm the welfare of the estimated 1 million children currently being raised by gay and lesbian couples (Blechner PG). Research shows that the law is making it difficult for same-sex families to get married which makes having welfare harder for families. Without welfare it makes raising children difficult. So if the law were to change and make marriage easier for same-sex families then children would have reasonable welfare and not have to worry about anything. As adults, most gay and lesbian people come to realize that they are as equipped as heterosexuals, emotionally and psychologically, to form lasting and meaningful relationships. Yet not being allowed to marry robs them of many kinds of security and support (Blechner PG).
