Firstly, the penalties for drunk driving should be more severe because many of the drunk drivers on the road have committed this crime before! You don’t even get sentenced with jail time the first time you’re caught, so this causes people to go right back to the same habit. During the second time a driver is caught, they don’t spend a long time in jail. What makes it even worse is that many young people are the victims of this crime based on teenage impaired driving statistics from Mothers Against Drunk Driving, auto accidents are the number one cause of death among young Canadians aged 15 – 25 and 50% of those crashes involve alcohol. Every day, on average, 4 Canadians are killed and 175 are injured in impairment-related crashes (MADD,2011).These crashes could all be prevented if people cared more about the consequences and the only way to get people to care more is if the penalties are more severe. No one really cares if they lose their license for a month but if they have to spend time in jail then they may think twice before getting behind the wheel after
