Most people would say that they already have scholarships and benefits. There’s over twenty thousands high schools in the United States that offer basketball as a sport. There’s an average of six seniors per team. There are three hundred and forty division one teams that offer basketball. Each team is given thirteen scholarships for basketball. Studies have shown, using these statistics that there is only a 1.19 percent chance for a high school senior to get a scholarship to play basketball at a division one college. So some of the players that play at this level aren’t getting scholarships to play. One of the NBA’s all-time greatest player, hall of famer Scottie Pippen, played basketball at Central Arkansas. The unique thing about Pippen was that he was a walk-on. A walk-on is someone who didn’t get offers or recruited to play basketball at a college. This means Pippen had no scholarship at all to play basketball. One of basketballs greatest had to pay for college himself, getting no help from scholarships. If the NCAA could have paid him, it probably would have helped him out a lot. As I mentioned before college kids also need money for other activities. Yeah, they may not have to pay to get an education, but they still need money for everyday living just like everybody …show more content…
The top high school kids would go to the school that could give them the most money. The way to avoid this is to not let schools pay or even talk about paying an athlete before he commits to that school. I’ll talk later in this paper about how these athletes should be paid. Another way to avoid that problem is follow in the NBA’s footsteps. Before each season they have an NBA draft. Each team gets to pick which player they want. The team with the worst record gets to pick first since theoretically they need the most help. After that the team with the second worse record and so on gets to pick. The problem with doing that in college though is a student is supposed to be able to choose where they want to go to school. So you can then let the athletes choose which school they want to go to. If someone lives close to Duke’s campus and wants to go to school and play for Duke, then they can do that. But the athletes that don’t really care where they go, they just want to play basketball someone can go into this draft. That way there is no talk of money before an athlete commits to a
