While this feline behavior is mostly observed in indoor cats, experts say that apparently, even wild cats enjoy playing with boxes.
Susan Bass, PR director at Big Cat Rescue in Florida explained the “if I fits, I sits” behavior to the solitary nature of a wildcat. She said that these cats would rather stay in dark, hidden areas where they can be alone, despite not really fitting inside the boxes.
However, it is not only the cat’s natural tendencies that encourage this weird behavior. According to Wilbourn, cat owners’ enthusiasm on seeing cats sitting in a box, leads to positive association of blissful feeling in cats. “People see a cat in a box and say, ‘Oh, that looks so nice and peaceful. It’s a positive association. It’s easy for a cat to get blissed out in a box,” she said.
