Researchers at Stanford University are testing a different type of helmet that inflates airbag to protect against collision. Originally created to improve the aesthetic look of a traditional helmet, this inflatable helmet also seemed to protect a biker’s head quiet better than the traditional one during an accident.
The helmets biker’s are wearing these days are better than not at all, but not that effective during an accident. Most of the biker’s don’t want to use the heavy helmets because of the hit, and those thin helmets can’t protect them when they fell from the bike. The result was published in the journal Annals of Biomedical Engineering.
However, this also comes with a possible downside. After re-inflating the helmet to the maximum amount before each time they dropped it to achieve these results, researcher Mehmet Kurt commented
The result could be more hazardous rather than beneficial if the helmet doesn't fill up with the maximum amount of air, causing the head to hit the ground with more pressure than that of a traditional helmet. Also, the crash test dummies don’t have neck, which is a great barrier in the U.S. to get approval for such helmets. However, such helmets are currently available in some European countries.
Keeping those facts in mind, the researcher team is now planning to do further research. Also, they are planning to develop a smart helmet that can calculate the severity of a collion and can protect
