Facebook is the most popular online social media networking software used globally by both individuals and businesses. It is an online place where people can potentially meet; send messages, play games, share photos and videos, and much more. It is a site used as means to interact with friends or fans. Their mission is to allow people to share and connect with friends and family online. Their intention was for people to use Facebook to discover what is going on in the world and express feelings that matter to their friends and fans. These statements have reflected on what the company is trying to portray itself. However, they do not match what the news feed has covered about Facebook. Facebook is reimbursed for providing peoples’ endorsement to selective companies. In addition, they can track users' purchases. Facebook began collaborating with data broker firms. They are paid by selling the power of users' consumer habits and monitoring their online and offline spending. Their partnership grants them the power to calculate the correlation between the ads viewed on Facebook and the in store purchases made; and determine whether the user is indeed purchasing in real life the items they see digitally. Finally, they have exploited their power by using consumers’ data by research. Engraved into their extensive fine print that users have agreed to, it states that Facebook has the right to use the information they receive for internal operations, including research. In 2012, they investigated about 700,000 users for one week in the attempt to discern if emotions spread contagiously via social networks. This included users under the age of 18. Because of this, a User Data policy was put into effect in May 2012. However, the research was conducted in January of
