When someone asks you to go somewhere the first question is “Where?” That is the same question writers ask themselves when they are setting up the plot. Geography and weather set up the whole idea of a story. A writer’s character cannot can’t go fishing in the middle of a road. Writers use geography and weather to even show the decisions of their character. Foster even says “Geography: hills, etc. Stuff: economics, politics, history. Why didn’t Napoleon conquer Russia? Geography. He ran into two forces he couldn’t overcome: a ferocious Russian winter and a people whose toughness and tenacity in defending their homeland matched the merciless elements.” (Foster 173). If Russia didn’t have the horrid winters and civilians who would fight endlessly to protect their country, Napoleon would’ve won. Seasons also tie into the geography when it comes to writing.
