How Did the Versailles Treaty Help Cause World War II? The purpose of the Versailles Treaty was to create peace, but instead began the start of World War II. Germany was blamed for World War I and was punished by the treaty for the destruction they caused. Germany had land taken away, military size reduced, and had economic restrictions placed upon them. This treaty took a lot of Germany’s territory; including the Alsace Lorraine, Danzig, Polish Corridor, and parts of Denmark.
