Hi, Today I am going to talk about the fantastic and the horrible Taiping Revolution. So, what is the Taiping revolution you may ask? Anyone? No? Well then, The Taiping Rebellion / Civil War, 160 years ago, this rebellion is most commonly known in China as Taiping TianGuo. It takes place in Southern China, Guangxi Province in the 1850s to the mid-1860s. 20 – 30 million people died, mainly civilians throughout the Taiping Rebellion. Which are twice the causalities of World War 1. In fact, the period from 1850 to 1873, as a result of rebellion, drought, and famine, the population of China drop by over sixty million people. Along with humiliating defeats at the hands of European powers, the mid-nineteenth century in China was truly tragic. The …show more content…
In other words, the reason why they rebellion failed is that when Hong Xiuquan and his army took over the corrupt Manchu Qing Dynasty. The new leaders are no better, they were also corrupted with power. Then a new generation of farmers took over the previous leaders and they also became corrupt. It just goes on and on. This is actually very similar to the book called ‘Animal Farm’ by George Orwell which is an allegory to the Russian Revolution and the Soviet Union. The animals (mainly the pigs) play the roles of the Bolshevik revolutionaries and overthrow the human owners of the farm, setting it up as, at first, all animals are equal. But throughout the book, the ‘all animals are equal’ has been thrown out of the window and the pigs are the ones in power and looking down on the peasants (the other animals). The novel describes how a society's ideas and beliefs can be manipulated and twisted by those in social and political power positions. This is very similar to the Taiping Rebellion, the French Revolution and other revolutions throughout

Towards the end of the Qing Empire, there was a lot of corruption and multiple revolts. The end of the Qing Empire was the result of a revolution: the 1911 revolution, led by Sun Yat-sen. The 1911 revolution brought the end to a 2,000-year-old monarchial reign, but it did not accomplish what it was meant to do. The revolution was supposed to change China’s government to a democracy, which it did, however, it did not last very long. Once Yuan Shikai passed away, China was left in a constant civil war, and it did not end until China’s new communist party stepped in.…

It can lead people to take over countries, destroying towns, or it can lead to the destruction of government. Lord Acton’s famous words, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely” ring true in Julius Caesar and the novel Animal Farm. The corruption that power can cause can still happen today in many ways.…

In the book Animal Farm, by George Orwell, pigs govern the community because of the lack in knowledge that the other animals had. The author chose to do this to show how in reality this occurs. The Russian Revolution of 1917 proved if citizens don't pay attention then a government might be corrupted from bad leaders. The animals in Animal Farm were unaware of the harsh decision because of lies excuses, and propagandas stated by their leader Napoleon, which corrupted their government.…

Aung San Suu Kyi a Burmese politician, diplomat, author, and winner of a Nobel Peace Prize said, “It is not power that corrupts but fear. Fear of losing power corrupts those who wield it and the fear of scourge of power corrupts those who are subject to it.” In the book Animal Farm by George Orwell, it shows how this exact quote plays out. The pigs, mostly Napoleon and Squealer, end up growing evil over time. Napoleon fears the animals will realize how he is treating them and they will rise up against him.…

“Napoleon was a large, rather fierce-looking Berkshire boar, the only Berkshire on the farm, not much of a talker, but with a reputation for getting his own way” (Orwell 16). Evidently, this foreshadows the fact that Napoleon, who was rather smart, will make himself dictator and have complete control of the farm by using authoritarian and totalitarian tactics just as Stalin did. Napoleon was extremely thirsty for power and got what he wanted by using terror as well as propaganda that none of the animals on the farm could fight against. He was a stern and harsh boar who manipulated the animals on the farm through cruelty, deception, and treachery to get his ways. It is without a doubt that Napoleon was a dictatorial leader who was obviously…
