In 1991, when the Soviet Union collapsed, there was a large change in Russia. For the first time in Russia, people felt like the vote actually did make a difference. When the Soviet Union collapsed, my aunt Sveta was fourteen. Of course at that age, she could of not vote, because voting is only for eighteen years or older, but her parents did. Before coming to the election, they prepared at home. They put on their best outfit, girls wear their beautiful dresses and boys put on their most expensive suits. The polling stations were located in schools, so they went into Sveta’s school. When they came inside, they were met with excitement and happiness. Everyone was happy, people smiled and balloons were everywhere, people brought whole families

How We Survived Communism and Even Laughed was written by author and main character Slavenka Drakulic. Drakulic is a renowned Croatian journalist, novelist and non-fiction writer who, in this book, writes about her and other females experiences of suffering under communism. The Soviet Union has the right to choose sides, just like we, Americans, do. There choice of supporting Algeria is theirs alone and we have no right to judge it. They simply chose who they thought was more honorable. Algeria wants freedom and that’s what we have been fighting for wholeheartedly. We will continue to support the Soviet Union’s choice. The reason it is hard to support their choice is because the terrible things that have been done by the FLN. Even though the Soviet Union knows what FLN has done, they still choose to support Algeria. Saying that seems like they support the killings but, they are actually very against the FLN but support Algeria’s victory. That is respectable and we close to the same opinions on this war.…

It's great that you gave back the point, but it's still historically inaccurate to say or really even imply that the Soviet Union was ever part of the Axis powers. At the time of Hitler and Stalin forming an agreement the population of the Soviet Union was fiercely against any real form of war, unless it was a revolution like the Spanish revolution or their own. The agreement was merely an agreement of not killing each other, with any other benefits being used as appeasements. Not to mention, that before the agreement, and for over a month after the signing, the Soviets were fighting along their border with Japan, a major Axis power. So you’re teaching us that the Soviets were just as bad, if not worse than the Nazi’s, were helping…

The breakup of the Soviet Union brought about many good things, but it did cause a few problems as well. One of the more main things that became evident after the Cold War ended and the Soviet Union fell was that the United States of America was the only superpower and was the most dominant, powerful, and influential country. Because of this unrivaled power America had, it granted America more power on the world stage when it came to many different things. NATO and the European Union were both expanded after the USSR's breakup. The world also saw America rise in power in the United Nations further increasing its influence on certain things involving this major world group. America also had many new enemies whether it be some of the former Soviet…

Further, The system was deprived of any “external checks and balances-such as free and fair elections” (Trudolyubov). Thus, allowing the Kremlin to glide through elections and continue to hold power. The elections that took place were merely a stage for the Russian government to manipulate its people in order to be discerned as democratic. Perestroika is widely regarded as one, if perhaps not the sole reason, that the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, or U.S.S.R, came to a dissolution on December 26th, 1991. The economic reforms that it pushed for and prompted are what allowed non-communist aspects to be incorporated into the Soviet Union and caused an uproar in political reforms such as Glasnost and the eventual fall of a traditional eastern communist system to a new western style capitalist system.…
