The Vietnam war (1950 - 1975) was a significant event for New Zealand and its involvement in it. It was commonly known as the Second Indochina War. It was the first time that New Zealand had not allied with its usual countries e.g.Great Britain. The Vietnam War was fought between North Vietnam/Viet Cong (communist - run by Ho Chi Minh) and American ran South Vietnam. As the war raged on in the early 1960’s, and the Viet Cong got closer and closer to the south, namely Saigon, America decided to intervene and send New Zealand and Australian troops to help out.
The war ended with the Communist North winning the war and Ho Chi Minh taking over in April 1975

The first men sent off to war, were sent in the middle of the night, so no one would see them. People believed that this was because the NZ government were embarrassed and ashamed of having to send people in to war. No memorial service or leaving party was thrown for the soldiers, which also fuelled the allegations towards the government. America introduced a campaign known as “Operation Rolling Thunder,” where they dropped high-explosive bombs. “If anyone was out in the open while a bombing raid took place, the shock wave of these bombs would knock an individual senseless if they were less than 1 kilometre from an explosion.” NZ thought that this was a cruel thing to be involved in and wanted out.
As well as all of this, the media also had a strong impact on many protests. The Vietnam war was the first war for reporters, journalists and video cameras to be involved in. Without any censorship, terrifying images from the war began to show on the TV at night, more and more people took to the streets to protest. “Lots of people believed that it was the media that sparked the lack of support towards the war.”
