Why Did The European Influence Halloween?

The Europeans influenced Halloween in numerous ways. The Samhain festival marked the end of harvest season, and the start of winter, which is known as the darker half of the year. Candles were lit and games were played. Games and activities like apple bobbing, nut roasting, mirror gazing, pouring egg whites into water, and dream interpretations were played on this night. People thought the souls of the dead would come back and try to get in their homes so they usually light candles(“Halloween-Gaelic”). The Celtic people lit fires because they believed the light of the fire would guide the dead on their journeys into the next world (Kessel 6). Bonfires were told to “keep away the Devil”.
