Why Did The Crucible Have Difficult Decisions Essay

The “crucible” means a pot that is used for heating metals to a higher temperature. However, it also meant a time of difficult or “crude” decisions. There are numerous reasons for the decision upon this word. It may have related to the time of the Salem Witch Trials and what Arthur Miller had written because these trials were challenging for the ones that had to make decisions on who to kill, etc. Additionally, it may have been related to the fact that witches uses pots of that kind for their witchcraft related things. The author may have titled his play “crucible” it connects with the witch trials, and it may also connect with the difficult decisions that had to be made to satisfy the colonists. “Crucible” was able to connect to the play it is represented in due to the witch trials and the witches that were involved in this incident. The majority of the real witches confessed to escape the trouble. Despite that, others that said no when questioned were hanged or killed in some way. This grew even more severe when people of higher ranks were accused and were hanged for denying so. During this time, colonists were faced with the fact that they were surrounded by fear in which any one of them could be a “witch”. Due to this, colonists began to accuse people around them, either in fear or revenge of others. Even the governors and reverends had issues with who was a witch or not. They would continuously have disputes about how the state of the city was going and even complained about some people’s innocence. With the difficult times that the colonists went through during the Salem Witch Trials and the difficult decisions they all had to make, the term “crucible” finds its spot within this
