The Congo Wars were a bloody conflict that occurred in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), with the first war occurring from late 1996 to mid 1997 and the second war occurring from late 1998 to mid 2003. The first Congo War started in late 1996, when the Tutsis began to rebel against the authoritarian rule of one of the key players of the conflict, Mobutu Sese Seko, and his supporters, the Hutu. The Tutsis quickly gained traction and when they neared the capital of the DRC from various strategic points, Mobutu declared a state of emergency to try and regain control. Ultimately, this failed and a new president, Laurent Kabila, was established in 1997. A year later, a new rebellion in complaint of the remaining Hutu in the DRC by the Tutsi…

Whether they were formally declared by the President or not, American has been involved in multiple wars over the course of its history. One war stands out as an outlier and unlike any war, the Cold War. This war was fought between two physical nations at odds but also two opposing ideologies. Very soon after World War II had ended in 1945, the Soviet Union showed no indication of allowing democracy to flourish in neighboring countries, specifically Poland and other Eastern European counties. This hindrance to democracy obviously did not line up with America’s values, considering it is a model of a democracy for other countries.…

The Cold War is noted as the struggle between two of the world’s superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, who are both trying to expand their spheres of influence. The government provided large sums of money for the defense industry and the American public was constantly in fear of a nuclear attack launched by the Soviets. The conflict can be viewed as an ideological confrontation between the democratic United States and the communist Soviet Union resulting in a peaceful ending, or a comfortable situation for both nations involved and the fact that it ended did no favors for the United States, but actually hurt it. The peaceful ending of the Cold War marked a great triumph for the United States because it proved freedom outlasts…
