I’m here in 476 AD in what will be my final trip to Rome. Things are not well here in Rome. First of all Rome has split into two parts. East and West. I’m in the Western Roman Empire. I’ve asked people here what has led to Rome’s downfall and there are many different reasons why it has been whittled down as far as it has, but the question is if Western Rome can survive and try to rebuild the once great empire? One of the reasons that Rome has fallen is because of Barbarian tribes. Several different tribes attacked Rome. The tribes included the Angles, Saxons, the Franks, Goths, Huns, Visigoths, Ostrogoths, and the Vandals that all attacked Rome at different times. Rome was constantly being attacked. Rome has, had so many wars and spent so much money that they had to impose very stiff taxes. The rich people in the upper-class decided that they no longer wanted to pay those taxes. Rome’s economy just couldn’t survive without those taxes. I promise I’ll never complain about taxes again after learning this. Another thing that Rome depended on was slaves. They needed slaves to tend to their crops and keep their agriculture production high. Usually Rome acquired slaves by defeating other territories and forcing their people into slavery. After all the attacks from barbarian tribes and the lack of taxpayers, they no longer had this powerful army. As a result they couldn’t defeat others and acquire new slaves. Instability at the top was another reason that Rome fell. I like to relate things to sports because I enjoy it so much. A famous cliché in sports is that if you have a different coach year after year, then the team will suffer because of it. Rome had many powerful and famous emperors during their time on top. However, at the end of Rome’s reign they had 20 different emperors over 75 years. That’s a new emperor every three and a half
