“In Kansas, when you came into my house in the middle of the night and arrested my husband and two boys and took them out of the yard and in cold blood shot them dead in my hearing.” John Brown was an abolitionist and hated slavery. To try and stop slavery, he tried to free slaves through violence. In this process, he killed and kidnapped many people. One main question is did John Brown start the Civil War? John Brown was a villain because he killed people all the time whether they deserved it or not, he was a very violent person towards others and John Brown was a liar. In his lifetime, John Brown was a very violent person. In his time at Harpers Ferry, Virginia, John Brown paid $5,000 to give 1,000 slaves a pike to fight for themselves. These pikes are about 10 inches long with a three and a half inch handle. This act is very violent because he gave slaves weapons to hurt people. These pikes could go deep into his skin and his intentions were to do so. Another very bad characteristic of John Brown was his lying towards others. John Brown was given $5,000 for defense purposes. He lied and used this money to buy the pikes to give to the slaves. He used the money to buy 1,000 slaves a pike to attack, not to defend. He lied and spent this money to use it to attack, not to defend. But also many people believe that John Brown is a hero because he freed slaves. He really did not free many slaves when he tried to free them. He freed around 10-15 slaves and he is praised as he freed 1,000. He freed them, whether they wanted to go or not, he forced them to.
