Great Britain (and other European powers) conquered the continent of Africa during the early 1900’s to strip the land of its natural resources and peoples. These colonizers affect Kenya to the point of no return.
The British Empire conveyed a major interest in Kenya and the rest of East Africa since arriving at its shores. Colonial administrator Sir Charles Elliot is credited with …show more content…
During the 1900’s, Africa had about 75 ethnic groups and a total of 1500-2000 languages. Communication between Nyamwezi and Sukuma would be strong, just like any village that are nearby each other, but Beber and Zulu would never be able to trade or speak to each other due to distance decay. The term distance decay is the “diminishing in importance and eventual disappearance of a phenomenon with increasing distance from its origin.”(Rubenstein Kt-2) The farther a location is from another creates a barrier; there is no reason for someone from Zulu to walk across Africa to see a Beber that he will not understand. The walk is useless, the Africans and the Europeans were aware of this. European powers lacerated the continent of Africa; they used their strength to force superimposed boundaries. These superimposed boundaries forced different peoples to live with each other under one language and king. In Kenya’s case, 13 ethnic groups were all forced to speak English, praise King Edward VII, and believe in one …show more content…
There is a political cartoon that depicts Lady Britannia with a group of men ready to display violence on Africans. Lady Britannia is holding a flag that says “Civilization” while the Africans hold a flag that states “Barbarism”. The English are holding guns and hatchets while the Africans are holding primitive spears. The political cartoon does not only show the English’s strength compared to African's, the cartoon shows the Africans being smaller or less important than the English. Britain’s army is so brute and massive that the peoples of Africa attempted to fight, yet they were unsuccessful because of Britain's technological advancements. It is quite ironic that Lady Britannia is holding a flag that says “Civilization” because they are being as savage and primitive as the Africans. Lady Britannia is also trespassing on territory that does not belong to her but is willing to fight for the land, “very civilized”. Many Africans did not want to take part in colonial rule yet “most Africans wound up accepting the authority of colonial state.”(Gella 269) The Africans knew colonialism was inevitable so they decided to roll over and let Europe take over. In political cartoon “The White Man’s Burden” it depicts John Bull (Britain) and Uncle Sam (United States) climbing up a mountainous hill filled with rocks that are engraved with words that a country must overcome to become “civilized”.
