Though Ralph is not the strongest character on the island, he proves to be the best leader for the boys. He tries to provide stability and order for everyone, knowing that both are crucial if they want to survive on the island. Along with that, Ralph knows that to get respect he must give respect; his understanding of what is needed to help the boys continue, on the island, leads to the boys viewing him as a superior leader. Where Jack is more interested in hunting for sport, Ralph first instinct is figure out a way to get rescued. He holds a meeting in which he suggests they create a signal fire: “A fire! Make a fire!” (page 38). Ralphs control over the boys, allows them to unite towards a common goal: survival. Rules and boundaries play to Ralph’s advantage in the way that it creates order and peace. He creates his shelters for the littluns to prove that he knows what the boys need, “they talk and scream… even some of the others” (page 56). Jack does not seem to understand this concept though.
