Why Did Beowulf View The Dragon

Improved Essays
Beowulf prepared for the fight physically, spiritually, and mentally. However, Beowulf knew that if he were to fight the Dragon with his bare hands that he would die. Beowulf realized that he needed armor and weapons. Beowulf prepared himself for the battle with the Dragon by getting armor made of iron because it would protect him more compared to wood. In addition to the armor, Beowulf also brought a shield and weapons such as a sword and a knife.
Beowulf must have felt confident because he has decimated a tribe of sea giants, defeated sea monsters, and has driven trouble out of his native land. It seems that Beowulf views the dragon as just another demon to slaughter. He’s killed many monsters before, so one dragon would not be a threat.

Clearly, this is not the case, as Beowulf believes in himself, displaying confidence and positive envisioning, which are both signs of optimism. The text describes Beowulf before his fight with the dragon, “Yet the prince of the rings was too proud to line up with a large army against the sky-plague. He had scant regard for the dragon as a threat, no dread at all of its courage or strength, for he had kept going often in the past, through perils and ordeals of every sort, after he had purged Hrothgar’s hall, triumphed in Heorot and beaten Grendel. He out grappled the monster and his evil kin” (Beowulf 159). This shows that Beowulf is an optimistic character because…
