Beowulf, a heroic poem, was the highest achievement in Old English literature. This poem did not appear in print until 1815, and was originally without a title until it was later named after the Scandinavian hero Beowulf. It is thought to be the oldest long poem to survive in Old English literature. Although there is no evidence of Beowulf existing there is proof of some characters, sites, and events in the poem existing. The poem falls into two parts. The first part starts off in Denmark when King Hrothgar’s mead hall has been wrecked for 12 years by an evil monster Grendal.
