From “Doc-Lap At Last” it is clear the Americans strongly opposed a communist Vietnam and peacefully protested the north until a devastating war broke out. The Americans supported the south by sending money and military advisers to Diem’s regime. But on August 2nd, 1964 the Vietnamese attacked U.S.S Maddox, a US Ship. America declared war shortly after, but they were not aware of how brutal it would get, involving mines, booby traps, guerilla warfare, burning villages, and spraying chemicals. Many americans saw this (since it was the first televised war) and wanted to pull out the troops because they viewed it as wasting money, lives, and effort.
