How must those who do not fit the pattern of this world survive? They would have to adapt to the modern world. Today there are new things such as technology. People are able to survive based on their income now. Amanda would survive because she was the typical mother. She had gentlemen callers just like the next girl and she wanted her daughter to have the same thing. She also was great at persuading people. She wanted both her kids to marry and have successful lives. She strived and sometimes pressured her children of becoming successful.
