Alliances, the Underlying Cause of WWI Millions of combatants and civilians died during the first World War, creating the desolate lost generation. European countries started WWI purely off of alliances, starting with the killing of the Archduke of Austria-Hungary. The triple alliance, Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy fought against the triple entente. The entente was comprised from the countries of, Russia, Britain, and France. Alliances are a type of formal agreement involved in militarism that is a concession to give a hand at war to another country. The underlying cause of World War 1 is due to alliances between European countries that created uneasy tensions throughout the alliance and entente. Germany started the war because they were initiated to strike back because of an alliance. “On Aug 3,Germany declared war on France, Germany invaded France via Belgium, according to the Schlieffen Plan. Britain sent an ultimatum to Germany asking her to stop invading Belgium. Germany refused, so Britain declared war on Germany on Aug 4” (markedbyteachers.com). Germany’s allied force was the cause of the war. Germany should have not joined the because they sparked further countries to assemble. They were the only country to declare the war and start it.
