There are several reasons why these inmates were able to escape alive. One reason is that the escapees were very clever. Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers all made fake heads so when the guards did the head counts it would seem like they were there. Alcatrez was an island surrounded by frigid, shark infested waters. The escapees continued to show their cleverness by making a raft so that they could get across the frigid San Francisco Bay without dying from hypothermia. Brace yourself for the next piece of the puzzle. On the same night that they used the raft to cross the bay, a car was reported stolen! The car was parked very close to where the raft landed. This is good evidence that the escapees were the ones who stole the car. What are the chances of a car getting stolen the night of the escape right where the raft was found? I’m sure the chances of the car being stolen by someone else other than the escapees is pretty slim.
Further proof that the men were able to escape Alcatrez alive was that a prisoner gave a detailed story of the escape to the officials. This prisoner was supposed to be the 4th escapee, but could not get out of his cell in time. He was able to confirm that the men made the raft out of raincoats. The plan was to float across the bay and then decide what to do once they reached land. Officials confirmed the inmate’s story by discovering a raft made of raincoats across the
