Why Cross Country Is Important To Me

On your marks...Bang! That is the sound of the gun going off, and hundreds of kids running like a stampede to one destination, the finish line. Many people think that Cross Country is just a hard sport to do and think why would someone want to run for fun. Well, it isn’t fun, and it is hard, but the friends that I have made in the sport, are some that I will never forget. It’s not just that, but it is a sport that helps, whether it’s getting someone in shape, or helping them realize that they can do anything if they set their minds to it. For instance, Michael Gleeson could not have broken the school record without putting a lot of hard work. I don’t think I would be the person I am today without the my teammates helping me. And I am not just saying it, the friendships that I have had since freshmen through senior year are some of the best kind of friendships that someone could have. They have helped me with not just getting faster, but also helping me gain confidence in everything I do. Having them run with me everyday, racing with me, feeling the same pain in a race, getting in shape, working hard, all at the same time, feels like you can just keep going, helping each other and keep pushing on. Even though we all run at different paces, we all run as a team, and that is what makes cross country one of my favorite sports. It’s not like running is the only thing that we do, we have done some other stuff. For instance, as we were running along in the woods next to a river, we found a rope swing that led into the river. So being the boys that we are, we decided to rope swing above the river. We did not want to let go because we thought our coach would get mad at us. Then Michael, one of our teammates decided to rope swing, and we were all making fun of him that the rope would snap at him as soon as he got out there, and let alone, it did. Everyone started cracking up laughing, I don’t think I have ever laughed that hard in my life. It was so funny. After that, we ran back to the school and let his clothes, air dry on the way back. Our coach never found out, but it is one of those memories that makes the sport more fun and worth

Throughout my four years of high school, the seaside community of Narragansett, Rhode Island, has encouraged and nurtured the growth of its youthful inhabitants as students and individuals. The supportive environment and abundant opportunities available for students to pursue their passions and help others consequently benefits the community as a whole. As an athlete, and more specifically, a runner, I have aspired to motivate and encourage young athletes to enjoy the fun and friendships that emerge from being a part of a sports team. During the summer, I volunteered at the Summer Youth Track Series at Narragansett High School. Eager smiles painted the faces of the joyous young runners lining up in heats, ready to run as fast as they can in the 100 meter sprint, throw as far as they can in the turbo javelin, and jump as far as they can in the long jump.…

As a year-round student-athlete, balancing classwork and academics with training has been at the forefront of my entire high school career—freshman to senior year. Though the classes I undertook were rigorous and required an extreme level of commitment and attention, I persisted with my athletic career because it taught me several valuable life lessons. The sport I feel that I am most involved in is Cross Country. While only a fall sport, it is, in my opinion, one of the most physically demanding and difficult sports to compete in. We train by running upwards of thirty miles a week to compete against other teams in 5000-meter races on various terrains.…

My freshman year, I decided to join my high school Cross Country team. When I started running, it quickly became clear that I was not a gifted athlete. Among the piles of homework and stress from school, Cross Country has been a welcome extracurricular activity for me. Running on the Cross Country team has helped to diffuse stress and help to increase both my focus and efficiency in school. In addition, the Cross Country team has aided in helping me find new friends, which tends to be a most difficult task for me. However, most importantly, running Cross Country has taught me the value of working both smart and hard, especially in difficult situations.…
