Why Colleges Should Not Be Free

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” - Nelson Mandela. Throughout the years the college enrollment rate has gone up and down. College enrollment fell in the early 1970’s to 47% and in 2001 to 61%. However, college enrollment went up in the late 1960’s to 55% and to 65% in the late 1990’s (Rampell, 2010). Free tuition college will affect many people, students that are finding colleges to go to, taxpayers and the schools itself would be affected. A in state public university student will have to pay an average of $9,500 for tuition yearly for four years. On the other hand a out of state public university student will have to pay an average of $23,000 a year for four years (N.A, 2017). An average public …show more content…
“This calls for greater access to a college or university education. U.S. leaders once hoped that by 2025, 60 percent of the population would be college-educated. So far it is closer to 30 percent” (N.A, 2016). US leaders hope that if there is a free tuition option for students that don’t have enough money to pay for themselves, the population would be more college educated. Although that is true, students should have to work hard and or get a scholarship to go to college, it shouldn’t be someone else's responsibility to pay for the students with little money. Even though there is a lot of positive outcomes to having free tuition at public universities, there still is a lot of negatives. Nothing is more important than a college education in today's world. But also working hard and earning money to go to college. Ultimately, what is at stake is the future. Not having free tuition college makes a difference, and all members in our society-- those who care about our future-- should support not having free tuition
