I previously said on this blog that I would be writing about anything that is relevant in my life, so I figured I would start off my first post with a few important lessons I have learned recently. These important life lessons came in the form of an unofficial transcript. It's May right now which means one very important thing: finals. Whether you are in high school or in College it is a very stressful time for everyone. If you're like me, then you have most likely contemplated what your purpose in life really is, and you have configured what you would need to get the ideal grade you want in all of your classes. College is ultimately a transitional period in someone's life, and it is definitely an adjustment to say the least. Colleges have gotten more and more competitive in recent years, speaking from personal experience, and this has led to high school students becoming more and more stressed because they feel like they have to have the perfect GPA and perfect SAT scores in order to become someone who is …show more content…
Basically, we all try extremely hard to fit into what we deem to be the ideal person who has a perfect GPA and perfect SAT scores. I know because up until recently I didn't realize how much of an importance I put on my GPA and getting all A's. As I was extremely stressed the other day at the prospect of getting a B I was having some extremely maladaptive physiological symptoms, and in that moment I realized it isn't as important as I originally thought. Every person has their own path in life, and a purpose that isn't defined by a certain GPA or getting all A's, or even achieving multiple degrees. Now, I'm not saying that your GPA isn't important because I believe it is always important to try your hardest in anything that you do. I'm simply saying that your worth is not determined solely based on the grades you end up getting in

College is a coupon for success. In today’s generation, one is seen to be most successful and more likely to achieve accomplishments if they have a degree; in addition, the better the degree, the more qualifications are perceived to be prosperous. The point in general is that college, itself, holds a lot of potential that affects an individual’s life tremendously, therefore students see they have the right to verdict and combat for the grade in which they consider is deserving and reasonable. In Brent Staples’ essay, “Why Colleges Shower Their Students with A’s,” he gives reasoning for the great grade inflation that is steadily increasing.…

Many high school students, including myself, strive to get good grades and SAT scores, for the purpose of college admissions. However, Bruni conveys that college admissions often causes students to become demotivated, after working tirelessly through the process. He writes, “My fear is that these kids are always going to be evaluating their self-worth in terms of whether they hit the next rung society has placed in front of them at exactly the time that society has placed it. And that’s dangerous, because you’re going to slip and fall in your life.” (Bruni 72).…

Grades don’t show intelligence, they cannot determine how great a person’s future is going to be, but adults and teachers tell students you need a good GPA to get into a big university to make a lot of money. In Adventures of Huck Fin, Twain is trying to get the audience uncomfortable through the use of Huck by having Huck stay with Jim throughout their journey knowing that he is going against what society believes in. This connects seamlessly to 2017 with the social dogma of going to a big university right after high school. In today’s society parents, teachers, and school counselors all talk to students about their GPA so they’ll get accepted into a University to make more money. In reality, there are so many more options to choose from than just going to college right after high school, but going to college right away is what is people have been saying to do since elementary school.…

It allows students to be compared for their future in careers or scholarships. Grades serve as a goal for students to work towards, keeping in mind that employers will be basing acceptance on your work. In an article written by Ben Krop, studies show that “students are motivated only to receive a grade because of the intrinsic value this judgment holds for their future and not for the possible knowledge that is suggested by this level of assessment.” I believe this to be true, if you took a random poll of college students across America, I believe a majority of them would respond saying that the only reason GPA matters is for their future careers and whatever they apply for after college. If there was no added pressure most students would be just fine with just barely passing classes to be able…

Within this framework i also believe that grades do not determine who you are, they are simply norms in society that are supposed to give us intrinsic motivation. While that is their aim, they only hurt is because it is essential that the individual actually finds the topic of study appealing. Moreover, grades are what Frederick Herzberg refers to as hygiene factors in his two factor theory. Within this theory, he is speaking factors that lead to positive and negative motivation.…

It seems like an innocent question, but if you unravel it, a worrying trend surfaces. Grades, ideally intended as an effective means to learn, have transformed into a goal in itself. Grades force students to memorize those details necessary to pass a test, often disregarding true comprehension of the subject matter. In this process, the student’s personal development is becoming a footnote, overshadowed by the imperative significance of grades. What are the implications for educational institutions?…
