Why College Athletes Get Paid?

Have you ever been watching a college sporting event on television and wondered how much the schools actually gain on having these sports? Well the answer to that question really is not that much. If the athletes that play college sports were to get paid those schools would lose a lot of money because it would be way too expensive to pay all of these athletes. You have to keep in mind that they already have to pay the coaches and teachers let alone athletes. From another aspect of looking at if college athletes should be paid or not is that it would take away how the players play the game. I believe that collegiate athletes should get payed for many different reasons. If college level athletes got payed they would most likely stay in school longer. Staying in school longer would led to more degree opportunities, which would equal more successful students and a higher success rate for the college. Students who aren’t athletes find time for jobs bringing in extra income, where athletes find it hard to make time for anything other than practicing and studying. If athletes in college were paid this would take a major financial burden of their backs, giving them having more time to focus on the studies and their abilities and not have to worry about how they are going to pay for their next meal.…

When looking at the money generated from college sports it’s strange they aren’t paid. Most will be surprised if they looked at the University of Texas and the revenue made in one year, just from football. “Business Insider reported that the University of Texas' football program generated more than $95 million the previous season”(Morgan). It seems that some of that money could be put into a paycheck for the players, even after all the expenses from the team. Football is not the only sport in which income from one season is high.…

In my opinion, college athletes should not get paid. Although I agree how college athletes work more than most students and have to juggle between classwork, homework and their “full-time” job as an athlete, they voluntarily decided to join a sport. Athletes are putting their bodies, mind, and time on the line voluntarily, where no one is forcing them to participate. Claims have been made that athletes should be paid because they are performing, however, not every athlete gets injured. Depending on the sport, the injury and chances of injury can vary.…

Most of them usually enter their name in the pro draft after completing one year of college depending on what sport they’re playing. Also there have been many pro athletes that said they would have stayed in college all four years if they were getting paid at least enough to take care of themselves and immediate family.
