These parents are instilling a view of life where everything is meant to be stressful and hard at such a young age, that it never allows the child an opportunity to be passionate about an interest or to discover something that they love to do. From early on, the child is told what they like and what is important, and in my opinion, that should be left up to the child to figure out.
She concludes her argument with the statement that the Chinese method of parenting is “Preparing them for the future, letting them see what they’re capable of, and arming them with skills, work habits and inner confidence that no one can ever take away.” How is that method letting the children see what they are capable of when they are not allowed to pick what they are interested in?
Although both sides have valid points, we cannot define what good parenting is until we define what a good life is. Is a good life something where you achieve all you can no matter if it’s something that you have no excitement over? Or is a good life something where you follow your dreams and hold what is important close to you? No one can know because there is a different answer for all of us.
