In algebra, letters are used to substitute for numbers. Algebra is about finding the unknown to make things easier, which involves by following some simple rules. As can be seen in Appendix C, where I used letters to represent the cost of items. In saying that, many people seem to be intimidated with algebra, which Lakin (2011, p. 65) states algebra injects fear into the hearts of people. I also correlate with this anxiety as I only began to learn basic algebra in secondary school. In fact, Reys et al. (2009, p. 310) suggest children should receive instruction that prepares them study algebra. In particular, algebra can help children to be better problem solvers. I discover in Reys et al. (009) that algebra consists of five perspectives in mathematical terms, such as, ‘algebra is a study of patterns and relationships’, ‘algebra is a way of thinking’, ‘algebra is an art, characterised by order and internal consistency’, ‘algebra is a language that uses carefully defined terms and symbols’, and algebra is a tool. In addition, I learn that the basic formula in algebra is commonly used to represent mathematical relations which occurs in individual to business management, such as, industry, science, and technology, (Christmas & Fey, 1990). Furthermore, I learn the concepts related to algebra consist of variable, functions, relations, equations and inequalities, and graphs, (Christmas & Fey, 1990).
