Why Cheating Is Wrong

Improved Essays
Morality is what we, as humans, have and use to separate the good from the bad and the right from the wrong. Growing up, we are taught that cheating is bad, that we shouldn’t cheat, and if we do, bad repercussions can evolve from doing so. Due to this, the idea that cheating is bad is instilled into our personal moral (or also referred to as honor) code. So the question arises, after many years of developing our notions of what is right and wrong, why do people still cheat and commit acts of dishonesty? Many times there are results that the come from the bad action committed, that are seen as a reward for that person. But what if the action can cause a reward for not only that person, but for others also, will that person be more inclined to …show more content…
Some of these studies have produced support of the economic theory which is when people weigh the cost and benefits of a situation and choice, which makes sense as most everyone values their sense of morality and being able to maintain it. According to Mazar, Amir, and Ariely (2008), people who believe themselves to be very honest, will try and make sure that their status is maintained in a positive way, while still being able to commit small amounts of dishonesty. For them, the cost of losing their positive moral view, is higher than being involved in a lot of dishonesty. These researchers looked at both internal and external rewards and how they affect self-concept maintenance. Through their six experiments conducted, it was constant that when a person was able to cheat, they did, but in smaller amounts per person in each experiment. These experiments helped to show support for their theory, that when a cost and benefit analysis is done, people will be dishonest to a point that they feel doesn’t cross their moral code …show more content…
The study was set up by taking the in-class students and splitting them into three randomly assigned groups by randomly assigning them numbers (1-the amount in the class) and then organizing them in order, and the first third were a part of the first group, second third part of the second group, and thus the remaining third in the third group. Then the first group remained while the others left the room. The first group was assigned no reward and were just told to find a familiar and relaxed environment and in 5 minutes complete as many matrices as they can and then submit the score online. The second group was assigned the reward that benefits the self, and was told the same except that that their number solved correctly would be equivalent to the notes able to be used on the final for themselves. The third group was told the same first conditions but that their reward for the average number of correct matrices the class solves, would be the amount of chapter notes allowed for use on the exam. All three groups were told the purpose of this study was to see how fast one can think in a familiar and relaxed environment. The study conducted thus allows us to see how people will do on the matrices when not observed and able to cheat, in order to reap certain benefits. Based on past findings and studies, we hypothesize that people

Many people mistake the word “integrity” to hold the same weight as the word “honesty;” however, Oxford Dictionary defines integrity as: “the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles.” Therefore, we can conclude that being honest is only a part of having integrity, so just because someone says what he or she means, doesn’t mean that this person has integrity. In “The Insufficiency of Honesty,” Stephen L. Carter discusses the misconception that many people have about the difference between honesty and integrity by presenting examples of how people that are completely honest lack a sense of moral behavior. Through a clearly reasoned discussion, Carter raises some insightful points about how honesty alone cannot make someone or some action morally correct.…

True citizens must go beyond the "right" expectations of a society by sometimes doing the wrong expectations in order to have the right outcome. Cheating is a wrong expectation in a society, and even though a society thinks cheating is never the right answer, there are a few cases where it may be a good thing. From the article, "What do school teachers and sip wrestlers have in common", by author Steven J. Dubner, he explains how cheating is a part of every citizens life, and how it may not always be a bad thing in a society because it is naturally a part of many people's lives and there may be some cases where cheating can be used as a slight benefit for some people. "It is the third grader who, worried about not making it to the fourth grade, copies test answers from the kid sitting next to him" (Steven J. Dubner 1). This example of how cheating may be a benefit might not be clear for some people because most people probably view cheating on a test, (whether it's just to pass a grade or not), as a meaningless act because the person who is cheating is not using the mind of there own.…

In order to get ahead and succeed in life, many Americans in our society today are throwing away their morals and creating what is named by Callahan as the "Cheating Culture". In the preface of his book, he claims that Americans who choose to cheat within this culture are welcomed and praised. It occurs in a variety of areas including business, sports, and education. This has resulted in what is described as a "Winner-take-all-society" in which everyone has become more competitive. Throughout the book, Callahan explains the problems that have lead to the development of cheating as a norm with the use of numerous examples from corporate scandals to situations that happen in everyday life like downloading free music.…

They hypothesis she tested was that a creative personality and mind encourage a person’s capability to explain their behavior, that leads to dishonourable behavior. Most people behave dishonestly due to their ability to cheat and also feel that they are behaving as honest individuals. The degree of originality allows people to easily behave dishonestly and it can be a handy role in understanding unethical behavior.…

A person will always act in their own best interest unless they are reminded of what being morally sound looks like. Ariely tested this idea in an experiment and the results are very similar to what one would expect to occur. “The moment people thought about trying to recall The Ten Commandments, they stopped cheating.” (Ariely, 8:16)…

Cheating and plagiarizing hurts the student more than it helps, but with a lack of interest and desire to do well, the student may disregard that possibility. Some students may do even better in an environment where cheating is less common because of an honor code, as represented in Alyssa Vangelli’s article. It makes sense that she has criticisms about a new honor code because not everyone will agree, but once it gets revised and makes students want to prevent cheating, students will end up doing better in school. A less excessive amount of writing a code and consequences and more focused on increasing the moral values of maintaining integrity will aid the success rate of students. Additionally, an increased moral value against cheating and a belief in themselves, students will be more encouraged to reduce the amount of cheating that occurs in school.…

This can lead to the understanding of one person’s pleasure is worth more than another’s. The problem with this idea is it relates usually to the individual and not a whole group or sometimes what is expedient for an immediate temporary purpose is in violation of a rule whose observance is much more expedient. Lying becomes agreeable by these means as it causes one to escape a temporary difficulty, however it leads to deviation from the truth which can weaken the trustworthiness of human assertion. This idea is based off of Kant’s ethical theory of self-imposed rules, also known as maxims. Mill believes that morality is based off of social rules rather than compared to the individual.…

Look at a student who 's excited about receiving an A on a test that he cheated on, for example. That student is not only misleading himself into believing he deserves a grade that he did not earn, he might have also missed an opportunity to learn important information. Being honest with oneself includes declining credit where credit is not due; it also means being trustworthy even when nobody 's watching. Consider for a moment a woman who accidentally exits a store with an unpurchased candy bar. She could easily eat the stolen candy bar and move on with her life.…

To society, the right thing to do would be to return it, because that's the moral thing to do. But if someone didn’t have the moral concept of the difference between right and wrong, they probably would take it. It is ultimately better for society if people choose morals over…
