Censorship is the control of the ideas and information within a society. Dictatorships all throughout history have used censorship to keep people living there (gilc.org). Censorship is a very broad term, but it is control of the ideas and information within a society. In a world like today the government is dictating what we see and they are censoring us and breaking the first amendment in the constitution. Other governments are censoring entertainment because it does not agree with what their government agrees with. Censorship is not needed because of the Internet and the constant posts that cannot be taken down fast enough. This idea is the basis of our democratic society. As a citizen of the United States of America it is our duty to be "well informed, libraries provide ideas and information, in a variety of formats to allow people to inform themselves.'' Although it is not the governments' job to protect your child from obscenity, Governmental institutions cannot be expected to interfere with parental obligations and responsibilities when it comes to what a child may read or view. Another thing people say that society especially children need to censored to be protected from commercials and advertisements that promote health-endangering products. (Whelan 37). This is not the case because citizens should use their intellectual freedom to learn more though books, articles and the Internet to make their decision on what they feel is correct about advertisements.
