Many may say boys can be more vicious and rebellious compared to their opposite sex. With human’s naturally bad nature or a child’s lonely feeling caused by the constant absence of an adult role model. Individuals affected may slowly become corrupted by these ideas. William Golding, in the novel, Lord of the Flies, uses the characters Ralph, Jack, and Piggy to demonstrate how the boys behaved to “the darkness of a man’s heart” during their time on the island.
The boys small amounts of knowledge against their large amounts of difficulties encountered on the deserted island caused many conflicts within the boys. In “Why Boys Become Vicious”, Golding expresses his idea of why children turn bad, “If parents are absent, if fathers do not provide strength and mothers do not provide love, then children will plumb to the depths of their nature”. Golding’s believes without a father’s strength and mother’s care than the child will become the worst of their nature. During the boys’ time on the island, there were no rules or guidelines to follow therefore the boys slowly behaved in ways they would not in real life. When the boys first arrived on the island they say “This is our island. It’s a good island, Until the grownups come to fetch us we’ll have fun” (35). The boys believe the experience on the island will be very fun since they won’t have to listen to anyone and are free to do what they please.
