Why Bother By Michael Pollan Summary

In the article, “Why Bother” by Michael Pollan, we see him discuss many arguments on why we should do our part in going green. His inspiration to start living green was inspired by Al Gore’s An Inconvenient Truth. He discusses that many people are aware of the rapid environmental changes, but feel that it is too late to take action. I don’t believe that is true.
There are many ways we can contribute to environmental preservation that he explains throughout the article. Some of these was include growing our own crops, reducing our meat intake, or abstain completely from economic activity like no shopping, driving, and electronics. We are so worried about our lives and our own small issues, that we don’t pay attention to the bigger issues in the world. Michael Pollan explains, “Virtually all of our needs and desires we delegate to specialists of one kind or another – our meals to agribusiness, health to the doctor, educations to the teacher, entertainment to the media, care for the environment to the environmentalist, political action to the politician” (pg. ). He is saying that we rely on others for almost everything in our lives and that everyone in our present society has a certain job, so anything outside of their job is considered “not their responsibility”.
