Beowulf is like Sir William Marshal in two crucial ways; when he is loyal and his prowess in battle. The first example we see of prowess in battle is when Beowulf takes out 3 monsters even with old age. Who could do that? When Beowulf the warrior fought the dragon he may have been older than 80, but still he succeeded. Another example is the battle with Grendel's mom. Grendel's mom was beating Beowulf in the fight but he got back up and sliced her head off with a sword that no man could lift. At the beginning of every battle Beowulf charges with bravery toward any opponent and with the help of Wiglaf killed the dragon when he was old. Beowulf is loyal to the weak and defenseless in the battle with Grendel. The hall had been terrorized for 12 years and he told King Hrothgar that he would rid the mead hall of Grendel. Beowulf knows he needs to be loyal to his leader and kill Grendel. In the next battle we see Beowulf look for Grendel's body to avenge for all the deaths Grendel had caused. He is loyal to his men and feels for their loss. The last battle he kills the dragon to save the geats from further terror. Beowulf is old yet he still serves his people because he loves them. William shows loyalty when his friend Henry died who he had served alongside with for a few years. He vowed to finish Henry's crusade after Henry had passed away. William spent two years fighting in Jerusalem to finish the job for Henry. Even though his master is dead he still wants to fulfill the task that Henry wanted done. King Richard recognized this loyalty even though they had fought days before. Richard rewarded William by giving him Isabel de Clare’s hand in marriage. William also shows loyalty when he was 70 and led the charge against the French. William wanted to be on the front lines so he could capture nobles himself. At the age of 70 he still serves alongside his people which shows the utmost loyalty.
